Contrary to Horace's maxim "carpe diem," or seize the day, researchers from some stuffy university have found that the pursuit of "hedonic well-being" is not conducive to overall physical health and longevity, but rather living with a sense of purpose, raising children and doing things that are generally annoying may lead to an increased lifespan and better mental health.
It's your classic quantity vs. quality argument. Sure, scrooge may have outlived Don Juan, but who would you rather hang out with at a party?
The results were released just in time for St. Paddy's day when millions of parents will neglect their children and spouses to don "kiss me I'm Irish" t-shirts and get sauced enough to forget their familial obligations so they can carry on for another year.
